Taking your courses

This article covers working through the courses you are enrolled in: starting and resuming, tracking progress, marking lessons complete, and understanding locked content. It is written for learners using the learner panel.

Where to find it

  1. Sign in at /login on your training site.
  2. Open the learner panel at /learner. Your role may be labeled "Student" on some sites.
  3. In the sidebar, click My Courses.

The sidebar also has a View Courses link that opens the public course catalog at /courses in case you want to find something new.

One note on signing in: sessions are per website address. If your provider also runs an organization site on its own domain, being signed in on one site does not sign you in on the other. Always open the site where you enrolled.

Starting and resuming a course

  1. On the My Courses page, use the filter to show All Courses, In Progress, or Completed.
  2. Each course card shows a status badge (Not Started, In Progress, or Completed), a progress bar with your percentage, and, on graded courses you have finished, your final grade.
  3. Click the button on the card: Start for a course you have not begun, Continue for one in progress, or Revisit for one you completed.
  4. The course player opens on the first lesson you have not completed yet, so you land where you left off rather than at the top.

Interactive lessons (the kind that open in an embedded player) also save a bookmark inside the lesson itself. When you relaunch one, it resumes at the exact slide or screen where you stopped.

Marking lessons complete

  1. Open a lesson and work through its content.
  2. The Mark Complete button appears after you have spent a short time on the lesson (about ten seconds). Depending on how the course is set up, the button may stay hidden or disabled until you finish the embedded content or pass the lesson's quiz.
  3. Click Mark Complete. The player checks the lesson off, updates your progress bar, and moves you to the next lesson automatically.
  4. On the final lesson the button reads Mark Course Complete. Reaching 100 percent completes the course, records your grade if the course is graded, and issues any certificate attached to the course (see Your certificates).

Locked lessons, drip content, and prerequisites

Some lessons and topics are locked when you first open a course. A locked item shows a panel explaining why, and when the lock is date-based, the date it opens. There are four kinds of locks:

  • Scheduled after enrollment: the item unlocks a set number of days after you enrolled.
  • Fixed date: the item unlocks on a specific calendar date and time for everyone.
  • Prerequisite: the item unlocks once you complete a specific earlier lesson or topic. The message tells you which one, for example: Complete "Lesson name" to unlock.
  • Sequential: in some courses each required item waits on the one before it, so you work through the outline in order.

A few things are never locked: lessons you have already completed, and lessons the provider marked as free previews. The Next button in the player stops at a locked lesson instead of skipping past it.

Some courses also have course-level prerequisites. Those are checked when you enroll: if you have not finished the required courses, enrollment is refused with a message listing every course you need to complete first.

Why did this happen?

Why did my course restart from the beginning after an update?

Your provider published a new build of the lesson content. Your saved place is a bookmark tied to the exact version you were studying, and when the new version cannot restore it (for example, the slides were restructured), the platform clears the unusable bookmark so the lesson opens cleanly at the start instead of freezing on a broken resume screen. Your completion status, score, and total time are always kept, so if you had already finished, you stay finished. When an update keeps the same structure, your bookmark usually survives and you resume exactly where you were.

I retook a quiz and scored lower. Did my grade drop?

No. On a course you have already completed, your recorded grade only ever improves. A lower retake attempt is ignored, and a grade an instructor entered by hand is never overwritten by a later attempt.

Why does my progress bar not move when I revisit a completed course?

A completed course never moves backward, even if the provider later adds new lessons. Revisiting records your activity and can raise your grade, but the course stays at Completed.

Why is the Next button disabled?

The next lesson is locked, either by a drip schedule or because a required earlier item is not complete. Open the locked lesson's panel to see the reason and, if there is one, the unlock date. Completing the current required lesson often unlocks it immediately.

Why can I not see the Mark Complete button?

The button waits for a short period of activity on the lesson, and on some lessons the course is configured to hide or disable it until you finish the embedded content or pass the quiz. Finish the material in the lesson and the button will appear or become clickable.
