About this course
Our Excavator Operator Safety Training delivers the essential skills and technical knowledge needed to operate excavators safely and productively across construction, mining, and civil infrastructure environments. From pre-operation checks and swing radius awareness to trenching protocols and emergency procedures, this program provides a thorough grounding in heavy equipment safety training principles that protect both operators and those working around them — building the confidence, competence, and industry-recognised certification every professional excavator operator needs to succeed on site.
Excavator Operator Safety Training is an online program for anyone who operates a hydraulic excavator - new operators preparing for their first machine, experienced operators refreshing their hazard awareness, and supervisors who need to verify that their crews understand the risks before they break ground. The course concentrates on the hazards that cause the most serious excavator incidents: contact with overhead and buried utilities, tip-over on slopes and soft ground, trench collapse, and ground workers being struck or crushed inside the swing radius.
Because excavators combine a heavy rotating upper structure with powerful hydraulics and frequent travel near people and traffic, competency is not optional. In Canada, occupational health and safety legislation requires that workers operating powered mobile equipment be trained and deemed competent, and that employers exercise due diligence to keep workers safe. This training gives operators the underlying knowledge those requirements depend on - and gives employers a documented record that it was delivered.
The program is fully self-paced and online, so individuals and companies can train without pulling crews off site for a classroom day. Theory completion should always be paired with hands-on, machine-specific evaluation by a qualified person before an operator works unsupervised.

What you'll get
Self-paced online modules
Work through the full excavator curriculum on any device, on your schedule - pause, rewind and revisit hazard sections as often as you need before testing.
Pre-operation inspection checklist
A downloadable daily walk-around checklist covering undercarriage, hydraulics, coupler engagement, fluids and safety devices you can use on real machines.
Trenching and utility-strike guidance
Clear instruction on locating buried services, daylighting, exclusion zones and trench-collapse awareness so dig work doesn't turn into an incident.
Knowledge assessment
A scored quiz that confirms you can recognize swing, tip-over and struck-by hazards before you're signed off as a competent operator.
Certificate of completion
A dated, verifiable certificate you can present to employers and supervisors as documented proof of theory training toward operator competency.
Reference materials you keep
Quick-reference notes on load awareness, ground bearing and shutdown steps that stay useful long after the course is finished.
Why choose us
Equipment Tutor builds training for the way excavators are actually used on Canadian sites - in tight urban dig zones, on soft ground, and alongside crews that depend on the operator keeping them clear of the swing arc. Every module is written in plain language and focused on the decisions an operator makes from the cab, not abstract theory.
Our courses are designed to support employer due-diligence obligations under Canadian occupational health and safety law, giving supervisors documented evidence that theory training was delivered before an operator was assessed as competent on the machine.
Student reviews
Exactly what our new operators needed
We put two of our newer guys through this before their machine evaluations and it covered the swing radius and utility-strike stuff really well. Easy to assign and the certificates went straight into our safety binder.

Clear and practical
Did this on my phone over a couple of evenings. The trenching and ground-condition section actually made me change how I set up my spoil pile. No fluff, just the stuff that matters in the cab.

Solid refresher
Been running excavators for years but the hazard awareness and shutdown steps were a good reminder. Would've liked a few more machine-specific examples, but for the price and the certificate it's well worth it.

Frequently asked questions
Does this course certify me to operate an excavator anywhere in Canada?
This is the theory-training portion of operator competency and concludes with a certificate of completion. In Canada, competency also requires a practical, machine-specific evaluation by a qualified person on the equipment you'll run, plus any employer or site-specific requirements. Always confirm what your employer and provincial OHS regulator require.
Who should take Excavator Operator Safety Training?
It's built for new and current excavator operators, labourers moving into operating roles, and supervisors or safety personnel who need to understand and verify the hazards. It applies to tracked and wheeled hydraulic excavators across construction, excavation, utilities and site-prep work.
How long does it take and can I do it at my own pace?
The course is fully self-paced and online. Most operators complete it in a single sitting or across a few shorter sessions, and you can pause and return to any module - including the trenching and swing-radius sections - as often as you need before the assessment.
Do I get something to show my employer?
Yes. On completion you receive a dated certificate that documents your theory training. Employers commonly keep this on file as part of their due-diligence and training records, then pair it with an on-machine evaluation before signing off competency.
